Day 24: Detroit, MI
Nau mai
Yesterday we played a show at the Detroit Fillmore.
The first photograph of my new series From the Bus. Mortar oozes from century old brickwork in the alleyway behind the Fillmore.
My breakfast was sliced strawberries, plums, and oranges, topped with yoghurt and granola, and then a sprinkle of salted, mixed nuts (from my private selection).
The Fillmore dynasty continued in Detroit with this extravagant, Rennaisance Revival theatre taking the name from its San Franciscan cousin. This room looks nothing like a Fillmore as we know it, but you can see the attempt was made with signature Fillmore chandeliers hanging in front of the murals - they almost look like they are painted objects in this photo. We were here a couple of years earlier supporting The National so I won’t dive into any details about the building save that the room is overwhelmingly beautiful. The dressing rooms are all stacked atop one another in the area behind the stage. Depending on your priority level in the show you get allocated a room further up the stairs. We were on the third floor and welcomed the extra exercise into our day.
I took a ride on the Detroit People Mover (DPM) and was highly impressed with this inner-city public transport loop. It was free to ride, high frequency, and nicely elevated above street level giving me great views of the downtown and Detroit River.
If you thought that reading a twenty word summary of the DPM wasn’t enough and you wanted something more immersive and punishing you can experience the full twenty minute loop in real time on the Breakfast and Travel Updates Instagram page.
The Fillmore microphone stands all have gold spray painted legs.
Spoon have a really good rock’n’roll front line with up to four guitars at once crowding the front of the stage.
As we were packing up our equipment we heard a rapid series of discharges echoing through the brick and concrete streets. The Detroit Tigers had won and had earned their city a fifteen minute firework display above the stadium.
We were gifted these beautiful Lego figurines.
