Day 38: Pittsburgh pt.1

Welcome

Yesterday we did some promo and then some leisure.

Jon and Liz were on deck from 10am with an interview but the rest of us caught an extra hour of sleep. For breakfast I reheated the leftover curries from our dinner the night before, a Butter Chicken, and a Palak Paneer, with a side of Naan.

At 11.15am we left our hotel to head to WYEP Studios for an on-air performance. Playing this early in the day is usually a bit more tricky so we all did thorough warms ups of our arms and voices. We did four songs with a small amount of interviewing from the host and it went great.

It was lunchtime once we were done so we headed to a local restaurant after receiving a recommendation from one of the radio staff. The rest of the day was ours so we went for a proper activity, a visit to the National Aviary. We arrived just before the penguin feeding, a process which involves the keeper tossing the birds as many fish as they can eat.

African Penguins. They are excellent at regulating their food intake and will top eating when they are full, although sometimes they continue to play with the fish.

There were several environments to experience, some of which were behind glass, and others had you in a tiny rain forest room with birds flying around your head and emitting their tuneful calls.

Toco Toucan.

Hyacinth Macaws.

Andean Condor.

Bald Eagles. It is illegal to keep Bald Eagles in captivity in the US unless they cannot survive in the wild. Both of these birds were rescued and rehabilitated and now live in the National Aviary.

Our evening activity was a much-delayed viewing of the weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Racetrack. We ordered food to the hotel and had a lovely night-in, despite the disappointing race result.
