Day 18: Rest Day

Welcome

Yesterday we had a day off in Prague.

We all had a pretty big lie-in and I definitely didn’t make it downstairs in time for the free breakfast. Finally though we managed to scrape together enough energy to leave our rooms and decided to head into the city. We caught the iconic number 11 tram from the Spořilov depot all the way to the edge of the Prague old town.

The Tatra T3 tram that we rode into the city centre. This model was produced in Czechoslovakia from 1960 onward and holds the world record as the most widely produced tram with over 14,000 built. It is still the most widespread tram in the world as of 2022.

Looking down at Václavské náměstí and the famous markets.

My first meal of the day was at a pub named U Zlatéhp tygra, where I sat beneath a photo of Bill Clinton and ordered grilled homemade sausage with mustard and horseradish, and a handle of Pilsner Urquell.

We saw the famous Charles Bridge which was begun under the reign of Charles IV in 1357 and was the only means of crossing the river Vltava until 1841.

Built between 1357 and 1402 the Charles bridge is 516m long and nearly 10m wide.

The Malá Strana Bridge Tower, which serves as the entrance to the Charles Bridge from the Western side of the river.

For dinner we visited yet another pub and thoroughly sampled the two varieties of beer on offer while enjoying a traditional meal.

As a treat for the real enthusiasts out there I’ll leave you with a short film that Tristan created in his spare time where he tries to find our room.
