Day 39: New York, New York - Rest Day
Nau mai,
Yesterday we had a day off in New York, New York.
We were awakened shortly after 9:30am by the sounds of Jay-Z’s Empire State Of Mind ft. Alicia Keys blasting out the speaker of Annie’s phone as she gently roused us/welcomed us into the city of big apples. Although most of us were still desperately trying to clear the gunk off our brain cells we all did our best to safely and quickly complete the first activity of the day which was to disembark from the bus as quickly and safely as possible as it was parked and blocking a lane on the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge.
We all did our best to remember what luggage items were necessary to get through a day of tour life and waved goodbye to Lavonda as she drove off into the distance. By 10am we were checked into our downtown Brooklyn hotel, and we had the day ahead of us with not a single soundcheck or pack down to slow us down.
Largely it was a day of rest for members of our tour party although I ended up doing quite a bit of walking. The mercury was sitting at around 0°C (-110°F) for most of the day but the sun was out if you could find it and the crisp winter air felt great on the skin.

For breakfast I went to a French sandwich shop called La Sandwicherie, in Greenpoint. They served their fare in crispy baguettes conquered with a little toothpick flag. I ordered a Truffle Buratta & Prosciutto sandwich with fig glaze, tomatoes, arugula, and olive oil.
In the evening Tristan and I went out to fill our souls with hard hitting Jazz music. Trumpeter Peter Evans and his group Being & Becoming played an incredible concert at a Brooklyn venue called Public Records. There was no better way to spend our night off in this great music city.
