Day 16: Carrboro, Night 2
Nau mai
Yesterday we played our second night at the Cat’s Cradle.
My breakfast came from inside the cutest building in Chapel Hill.
The restaurant was called The Purple Bowl and it specialised in a cuisine called Açai bowls, a dish made from the fruit of the Açai Palm, mashed and blended into a paste, and then served chilled, topped with other superfoods to maximise the nutritional impact of the meal. Inside the purple bowl restaurant was mostly air - hardly any tables and a tall stud height that emphasises the spacious, minimalist feel. I crossed the expanse from the door to the counter and ordered the only bowl that contained bee pollen, a dish called the Dragon Bowl: bee pollen, blueberries, coconut, kiwi, lime, pitaya pink base, mango, pitaya, strawberries, hemp milk.
It was another sweltering hot day in Carrboro with temperatures reaching right up to ninety five which is scarily close to boiling. White Russian was still attempting to seek shelter beneath an inadequate belt of trees and attempting in vain. But proudly waiting was what she was paid to do and she would not be heard complaining.
I had a delightful afternoon in Carrboro. I went to the salon and had my hair trimmed. Liz tried to take a before and after photo and I’m not sure whether it does this haircut justice.
Somehow it looks like I’ve gained hair but it’s definitely better.
I also visited the local coop for lunch and had a couple of wins at the thrift store, returning to the bus feeling thoroughly satisfied with my experience of this town.
As I was out walking the weather turned, abruptly. I tried to capture the wind tousling the leaves of this tree. A few seconds later raindrops the size of golfballs began to fall and I took retreat inside the thrift store. Twenty minutes later the sky was again blue and the heat had returned albeit with increased humidity. The chaotic and changeable weather reminded me of home.
Tristan and I set up in the back of the bus with the jam kit, which barely fits in the narrow width of the corridor.
The Beths appliance library continues to grow with the aquisition of a Technivorm Moccamaster, pictured here next to our two-slice Hamilton Beach toaster.
Our second night at the Cat’s Cradle was extremely fun. This venue is the perfect blend of intimacy and energy. We finished our set and rushed off stage to finish eating dinner leftovers and then began the packout, discovering that we had missed a heavy rainshower while we had been safely inside.
