Day 1: Auckland to New York

Nau mai,

Yesterday I flew from Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa, to New York, New York.

The blog is back! And in a shorter, time-saving format, with fewer words on the page to worry about. If you are worrying about value, don’t! You will receive more breakfasts per word than ever before. And I won’t be afraid to throw a few facts to pad things out although I may not bother to dress them up in any context.

The reason for this change is that my writing time is being put towards a musical arrangement for Josh Worthington-Church’s Exploding Rainbow Orchestra. If you aren’t lucky enough to have tickets for the shows next month I feel very sorry for you. This is one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s most precious arts projects and this year’s series is not one to miss.

At the minimum I will keep everyone updated with breakfasts and locations, and perhaps a few generously captioned photos of daily events. Hopefully I will be back with the medium-form curious and delving content that is expected from a word and photo-oriented publication of this stature.

Here are a few pics from my recent journey where I flew from Auckland to New York. I was alone on these two flights, the rest of the band having traveled ahead of time.

The LED message sign on the side of the Mainfreight logistics building had plenty of pixels up its sleeve after displaying this succinct yet powerful adage.

Isla Espíritu Santo, and Isla Partido: the first of my series of mediocre windowseat photographs. The former is the twelfth largest island in Mexico and lies near the southern end of the Gulf of California, just of the coast of the state of Baja California Sur. The parallel troughs are a result of earthquakes and volcanic activity (no surprises there). According to the uncited Wikipedia article“the islands resemble a horizontal rainbow with earthy tones”.

Memphis Tennessee: the Mississippi River is almost visible in this photograph.

Nashville Tennessee: Music city looked quite spectacular underneath the sunset.

I think this is Washington DC. At some point my phone camera lost its ability to focus.

View of the Manhattan Skyline from my hotel. Finally made it to Queens, New York. My phone has completely given up.
