Day 23: Hamden CT

Welcome

Yesterday was a rest-day spent in ‘The Land of the Sleeping Giant’, Hamden, Connecticut.

Tristan and I started our day with the first snow run of the tour. We ran around Lake Whitney and explored a one of the local trails which led us to a frozen pond.

Lake Whitney.

Tristan takes his chances on the frozen pond.

Breakfast was sourced from a highly-rated local establishment Sushi Palace. I had both Tuna and Spicy Salmon flavours.

In the afternoon we walked the 7km to New Haven for a look around and spotted some nice buildings from the local university.

Sadly we are running out of days on this tour and we are still nowhere near the end of the bus tour. For this reason I have asked our automotive editor Tristan Deck to do a bit of the lifting. Please enjoy the following words.

Today's tour takes us past our bus' scullery. If the kitchen is the heart of the home then this area must be the belly of the bus, where members of the twelve strong touring party congregate to nourish their bodies and fuel their minds. Residing in the overhead cavity above the fridge combination freezer, we have the Sharp Carosel Grill 2 Convection Microwave equipped with True Cook Plus™ technology.

True Cook Plus™ is a microwave oven operating system whereby users enter a short code found on the rear of microwavable food packaging that enables accurate reheating and cooking of frozen foods. Patented in 2010, True Cook Plus™ technology is endorsed by the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association as an effective method to lower the risk of Salmonella and E Coli poisoning.

Upon first time use, users input their zip code into the microwave computer, which accounts for elevation. The next step is to enter the short code found on the food packaging, which allows the computer to calculate the precise cooking and standing time, factoring in microwave wattage, ambient temperature, cavity size and the size and shape of the food. Any microwave with a True Cook Plus™ operating system onboard takes the guess work out of microwave cooking and ensures food is safely cooked to USDA recommended standards. As the numerical codes are descriptive to the computer, any True Cook Plus™ enabled microwave will never need a database update as new microwaveable foods are discovered.

Unfortunately, as of 2019, True Cook Plus™ coding on food packaging has been retired. The official website is offline but legacy codes are able to be looked up on the archived data base here: https://web.archive.org/web/20170622175519/http://truecookplus.com/codes
