Day 4: Napier

Welcome

Yesterday we had an easy start and drove the three hours from Tauranga to Napier where we played a show at Cabana Bar.

We were on the road by 10am and headed straight to the award winning Patrick’s pies for a delicious and convenient breakfast. I had a prawn and garlic pie.

The drive to Napier was almost as smooth as the tunes as we completed our first Baker’s Dozen (13 consecutive listens to a song) to the classic Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey duet One Sweet Day.

We stopped for a rest at Tarawera Cafe and were repeatedly harassed by a wasp who landed on everybody and then ate some of Tristan’s donut.

Napier formerly known as (Ahuriri) was founded in 1855 by the Government and named after Charles Napier the commander-in-chief of British forces in India. The town was established due to it’s ideal location for a port however lack of space was a problem until the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake raised the inner harbour. The earthquake also razed much of the city but the reconstruction has led to a heavy and unique concentration of Art Deco architecture of which you can see one of my favourite examples below.

I love a good collage and it’s my pleasure to present this one of Tristan spotting a Peugeot 205.

We had a phenomenal pizza dinner and then headed to the venue for some car park cricket and a gig.

Finn Roberts opened up the night with a cool solo set of acoustic guitar with loop pedals.

Here is a clip of Dateline performing some of their excellent song Such A Bitch. You can check out the music video here.
